My Hair Growth Journey

Wednesday, April 29, 2015

My hair growth journey started about 7 years ago, after a traumatizing salon hair cut experience at my local Dominican Hair Salon. I went in to have my curly hair straightened. My hairstylist at the time, whom I've gone to several times before recommended a hair trim due to the damage and dryness of my ends. Consensually  I accepted. It wasn't until the style was done, that I took notice at how short my hair looked straightened after the so called trim. It seemed as though she cut about 4 inches of my hair. My hair was above bra strap length before the cut and after the cut it was above my shoulder. To me this was not what I was expecting, considering that she had only recommended a trim, which to me is much different than a cut, or so I thought. Nevertheless, I was distraught and disappointed.  I am not the type of person to confront people and so instead of expressing my concern because I knew it was not going to bring my hair back, I left and never went back.

Ever since that day, I vowed to not only refuse to cut my hair but to completely stop using chemical relaxers. I had used relaxers in the past due to my lack of knowledge regarding taking care of and styling my natural hair texture. My mother began relaxing my hair at a young age and so it became normal for me to relax my hair every few months until I finally took it upon myself to stop the cycle. Throughout my relaxer years, I noticed my hair would grow at very slow pace, never passing bra length. Also i noticed my hair would become brittle, weak and in return it would end up falling and breaking off. This made my decision of eliminating relaxers from my hair routine much easier.

Refusing to cut or trim my hair was due to my eagerness and longing of having that long beautiful hair I've always wanted as quickly as possible. I knew that trims and haircut where always recommended by hairstylists in order to keep hair healthy, but ever since that experience, I could not trust anyone to trim my hair again. I knew that in order to have healthy long hair without trims or cuts I would have to change my hair routine drastically. The steps I took toward growing my hair long and in good health are as follows:

Step 1. Staying away from scissors. To me it was obvious that the less you cut, the more length you are able to retain.

Step 2. Taking care of my hair. Doing hot oil treatments and deep conditioning treatments at least once a week. Keeping hair moisturized and nourished with oils such at Coconut, Jojoba, Moroccan, Olive and other natural beneficial oils. Styling my hair by doing protective hairstyles such as buns and braids that did not require the use of heat.

Step 3. Cutting down drastically on using heated styling tools such as iron, blow dryers,  flat-iron, curling irons, etc. I would only use heated styling tools every 3 to 4 months, compared to every other day or so, to decrease the chance of heat damage as much as I could. I recommend using bonnet-dryers and hooded dryers which are forms of indirect heat, much safer for hair.

The top three steps helped me get to the length I have now, which is about tailbone length. My hair may not be in the most perfect condition but I consider it to be in pretty good condition. I hope that this video and tips help those who are looking to grow healthy long hair. If it worked for me, it could work for you. Why not give it a try? You might just reach a length you never thought you could have, like i did.
